LA HABRA HEIGHTS, Calif. — The Palos Fire burned through a brush-covered hillside in La Habra Heights on Monday, September 14, 2026, destroying two homes and damaging two additional outbuildings as firefighters worked to keep the flames from spreading into nearby residential areas.
The fire was reported shortly after 2:30 p.m. near Lupin Hill Road and Las Palomas Drive. Crews faced steep terrain and dense, dry vegetation as the flames moved uphill toward homes, prompting a major response from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and assisting agencies.
Palos Fire Burns 17 Acres
The fire initially covered an estimated 20 acres, but later mapping placed the final burned area at approximately 17 acres.
Firefighters stopped the forward progress at about 4:48 p.m. Crews then remained in the area to strengthen containment lines and work on remaining hot spots.
By September 17, the fire was reported to be 80% contained, according to the information provided for this report.
Two Homes Destroyed in La Habra Heights
The fast-moving fire damaged four structures in total, including two homes and two outbuildings.
The flames threatened residential properties as they moved through the hillside, forcing firefighters to concentrate on protecting homes and preventing the fire from advancing farther into the community.
Aerial firefighting resources were also used as part of the response.
Evacuation Warnings Issued During Fire
Evacuation warnings were issued for parts of the surrounding area as the fire approached residential properties.
Residents around areas including Casalero Drive, Ardsheal Drive and West Skyline Drive were advised to leave during the emergency. Los Altos High School was used as an evacuation shelter.
The warnings were later lifted after firefighters stopped the fire’s forward movement.
Fire Injuries Reported
Officials reported injuries involving one civilian and one firefighter during the Palos Fire. Both were expected to recover.
Firefighters also rescued animals from properties threatened by the flames.
No fatalities were reported in connection with the fire.
Palos Fire Cause Remains Under Investigation
The cause of the Palos Fire has not been determined.

The City of La Habra Heights has since moved into recovery operations following the fire.
