Katie R. Kieffer, 35, of Darlington, Wisconsin, has been remembered by family and friends following her death in a shooting in Grant County on September 19, 2026.
The fatal incident happened in the Township of Smelser, south of Cuba City, where Grant County authorities responded after two people were reported suffering from gunshot wounds outside a residence. Kieffer was pronounced dead at the scene, while a wounded man later died after being taken to a hospital.
What Happened to Katie Kieffer?
Grant County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the area at approximately 1:28 p.m. on September 19 following reports of the shooting.
Kieffer was found with fatal gunshot injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later identified her as the 35-year-old Darlington woman.
The other person injured in the incident was taken to a hospital in Platteville before being transferred to Madison, where he later died.
Authorities subsequently characterized the incident as a murder-suicide.
Katie Kieffer’s Life in Darlington
Katie was born on March 1, 1991, in Dodgeville and grew up in Darlington. She graduated from Darlington High School in 2009 before earning a CNA certificate from Southwest Wisconsin Technical College.
Her working life included positions as a CNA and LPN. She later completed pharmacy-technician training and worked at Hartig Drug in Darlington.
Those who knew Katie described her as positive, thoughtful and independent.

She served as secretary of the Pecatonica Valley Antique Club and enjoyed activities including gardening and cooking. She also valued time spent with friends, including annual vacations and other shared experiences.
Her son, Rolan, was especially important to her and was described as the center of her life.
Funeral Services for Katie Kieffer
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2026, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington.
Burial will follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for September 24 and again on Friday morning before the funeral Mass.
